West Hill Events

The historic residential ridge climbing west out of downtown that filled in as middle-class residents fled the smoke of East Side rubber plants in the early 20th century. The Hall Park Allotment Historic District is the centerpiece — American Foursquare, Craftsman, Colonial, and Medieval Revival homes developed by Philander Hall between 1902 and 1919 at the height of Akron's rubber boom. Glendale Cemetery (founded 1839, on the National Register since 2001) sits on the western edge with its Gothic Revival Civil War Memorial Chapel, and the WPA-built Glendale Steps — 242 hand-laid sandstone steps from 1936–37 — descend the hillside as a Depression-era monument to stonecraft. Expect community gatherings, historic-home programs, and outdoor events on the steps.
